People with a lived experience of gynaecological cancers are the centre of everything we do, whether that is designing clinical trials, advocating for research funding, or educating the next generation of health professionals.

ANZGOG’s Community Engagement Program delivers opportunities for people with lived experience of gynaecological cancers to contribute meaningfully and fosters a groundswell of action through our volunteers, to impact outcomes for women now and in the future.

Three pillars of Community Volunteer roles

Within the program, Community Volunteer roles span across three areas: Education, Advocacy and Research.

  • In Education, the Survivors Teaching Students (STS) Program pioneers a unique approach with gynaecological cancer survivors and caregivers sharing their lived experience with health professional students. Since its inception in 2017, over 12,500 students in Australia and New Zealand have gained a deeper understanding of gynaecological cancers to take forward into their future practice through this impactful initiative.
  • Within Advocacy, WomenCan, ANZGOG’s fundraising arm, endeavours to bridge the critical funding gap for gynaecological cancer research. By joining the Advocacy volunteer pathway, individuals have the opportunity to use their lived experience to emphasise the importance of investing in research, ultimately contributing to saving lives and empowering women.
  • ANZGOG conducts and promotes clinical trials and undertakes multidisciplinary research into the causes, prevention and treatments of gynaecological cancers. Research Community Volunteers will have the opportunity to contribute to ANZGOG research at every stage of the development process. Community volunteers will lend their voices to research discussions sharing their personal perspective and representing the broader views of people with lived experience of gynaecological cancer.

For people with a lived experience interested in contributing to gynaecological cancer research, the program caters to individual areas of expertise.

Volunteers are matched with the pathway that align with their interests and experience, offering flexibility in contributing at various levels. Recognising the value of volunteers, ANZGOG provides comprehensive training, ongoing support, and a well-guided structure through Volunteer Agreements, Inductions, and support networks.
