ANZGOG is pleased to announce that Dr Helen Gooden, National Manager of the Survivors Teaching Students (STS) program, has been named as a 2021 Westfield Local Hero.

The Westfield Local Heroes program recognises, celebrates, and rewards community role models whose work promotes social wellbeing and cohesion in the community.

As National Manager for STS, Dr Gooden has played a key role in establishing the Survivors Teaching Students program in Australia and is delighted to use the Westfield Local Heroes grant, of $10,000, to generate a larger audience and contribute to raising awareness for gynaecological cancers in the broader community.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be announced as a 2021 Westfield Sydney Local Hero! Thank you to everyone who voted for me to make this possible. The win means $10000 will go towards creating a Survivors Teaching Students (STS) Podcast series. Due to interest and demand, the STS Podcast series will mean your stories, our amazing Survivors Teaching Students volunteers across Australia, will have an even greater reach and continue to make a difference for all of those affected by ovarian and gynaecological cancers.

This is a celebration for all of us, thank you for your passion and generosity in supporting our ANZGOG Survivors Teaching Students Program.”

Dr Helen Gooden, National Manager of the Survivors Teaching Students

This year, STS is expected to reach over 2000 university students across Australia and New Zealand. 2021 has also included the onboarding of the University of Adelaide and a 30% increase in the number of presentations, compared to the previous year. With the recent addition of Tasmania, STS is now active in all Australian states and New Zealand, accumulating a total of 110 volunteers.

ANZGOG would like to thank all who voted for Dr Gooden and the STS program. It is with your support that STS can continue to improve life for women with ovarian and other gynecological cancers.
