Survivors Teaching Students® is a ground-breaking volunteer program that brings ovarian and other gynaecological cancer survivors and caregivers into the classrooms of health professional students to teach them about women’s experiences with the diseases.
Please join us on Thursday 27 February at 12.30pm AEDT to hear about Survivors Teaching Students (STS), and how your voice can educate and inspire the next generation.
The Survivors Teaching Students program offers a unique and powerful opportunity for gynaecological cancer survivors and caregivers to share their stories with our next generation of health professionals. Survivors and caregivers are in a unique position to help students understand the ‘lived experience’ of a gynaecological cancer, including the psychosocial impact, and the importance of timely diagnosis, good health communication and compassionate care.
Student feedback demonstrates STS is a highly valued learning experience providing students with memorable patient insights to inform their future practice. Many STS volunteers attest that being part of the program is one of the most empowering things a survivor or caregiver can do.
“Speaking about my experience provides me with an opportunity to create something positive from a tough time in my life. It’s the light within the dark.” STS Volunteer
In this free online information session, you’ll hear from the ANZGOG Team and two of our wonderful STS volunteers, both with a lived experience of gynaecological cancer. Elsa Larsen and Victoria Turner will share their insights into being an STS volunteer from both a caregiver and patient’s perspective.
We’ll talk about:
- How the STS program works and its impact on educating future healthcare professionals
- The role of volunteers in educating students
- What’s involved in becoming a volunteer and sharing your story
- The support and training provided to STS volunteers
- Experiences from current volunteers
